Legacy Wärtsilä 34SG rehabilitation: an OEM-assessed route to modernization

EnergyEquipment is developing an asset-specific rehabilitation pathway for legacy Wärtsilä 34SG engine-generators and power plants in discussions with Wärtsilä. The objective is to evaluate suitable existing engine cores for OEM-executed rehabilitation and modernization, with an agreed warranty, performance guarantee and long-term service agreement where Wärtsilä approves and contracts for that scope.

What has been reviewed

For the identified UK and Spain engines, the supplied September 2026 project materials report Wärtsilä’s review of submitted engine numbers and confirmation that rehabilitation and upgrade pathways can be assessed. A physical site audit remains necessary to confirm feasibility for each engine. This screening is not a completed overhaul, blanket warranty or binding performance commitment.

What the proposed scope can include

The project concept retains the engine block and crankshaft only if inspection supports reuse, renews components under an agreed bill of materials, and evaluates new generator ends, controls and protection. Cooling, fuel systems, emissions equipment, auxiliaries and receiving-site integration must be scoped for the intended duty. No all-parts replacement specification is final until agreed with Wärtsilä.

Warranty, performance and lifecycle support

Any OEM warranty covers only the parts, work and responsibilities stated in the executed OEM contract. Output, heat rate, emissions, test conditions, remedies and exclusions must be negotiated explicitly. An LTSA addresses the separately agreed maintenance and lifecycle scope; availability or reliability commitments are not implied by the phrase LTSA.

How to read the power ratings

Existing historical ratings and potential modernization figures are separate. The five-engine UK/Spain group contains four 18-cylinder engines and one 12-cylinder engine: 84 cylinders. At a referenced planning basis of 380 kW per cylinder, arithmetic gives 31.92 MW; our 31 MW* headline is a rounded planning target. The source correspondence summarized in the project materials does not explicitly establish 380 kWe per cylinder. Generator losses, frequency, ambient conditions, fuel, emissions limits and auxiliary loads affect the final contracted electrical output.

Historical reported output is 10.00 MW for the UK pair and 17.94 MW for the Spain trio, totaling 27.94 MW. Selecting the five individual listings, the regional packages and the combined package does not add equipment: it remains five physical engines.

Schedule and next steps

Asset selection, inspection, OEM scope, long-lead orders, relocation and site engineering determine the schedule. Early project discussions described materially shorter procurement for selected rehabilitation components than fully new equipment, but those indicative comparisons are not a delivery commitment. Buyers should obtain a current OEM schedule and receiving-site plan.

Contact EnergyEquipment with required net output, frequency, voltage, fuel specification, site conditions, emissions limits and target operating date. We can coordinate asset information and discussions needed for an OEM assessment. Detailed serials, exact locations and sensitive owner information are shared through a controlled diligence process.
