Buying surplus Eaton transformers: a serial-specific checklist

A surplus transformer can shorten an equipment procurement path, but a familiar kVA number is not enough to establish compatibility. The useful purchase process starts with the selected serial numbers and ends with an agreed inspection, testing and installation plan.

EnergyEquipment.com’s Eaton offering consists of fifteen 2,600 kVA units: thirteen reported unused and in excellent condition, and a separate two-unit repair group. The 13-unit package totals 33.8 MVA; the repair group totals 5.2 MVA. Individual and package listings refer to those same transformers.

Match the actual voltage configuration

The representative equipment documentation describes 34,500 V delta primary and 416Y/240 V secondary, three-phase, 60 Hz. The 416 V figure is line-to-line and the 240 V figure is line-to-neutral. A search for 415 V can help locate the opportunity, but it does not change the 416Y/240 V nameplate.

Have the project engineer confirm load tolerance, system grounding, protection coordination and the receiving-site voltage. These units are not a direct substitute for 480Y/277 V equipment simply because the physical size or kVA is attractive.

Read taps and impedance from the selected unit

The representative plate shows five primary tap positions spanning 32,780 to 36,220 V. These are discrete settings, not a continuously adjustable input range. Confirm the actual tap table and switching procedure for each purchased serial number.

The deck reports a representative DY1 vector group and 5.81% impedance. Parallel operation, fault-current calculations and protection settings require engineering confirmation using the selected units’ data. A shared model number is not sufficient evidence that units can be paralleled in any arrangement.

Understand the two condition groups

The thirteen-unit group is seller-reported unused surplus in excellent condition. Unused does not mean newly manufactured or recently acceptance-tested. Confirm storage history, preservation, seals, bushings, gauges, accessories and available factory or field test records.

The repair group has two reported leaks: a pinhole radiator leak on one unit and an X0 lug/nut leak on the other, with low fluid on both. The latest deck does not map those defects to individual serials. Until that mapping is confirmed, the listings describe the group issues without assigning a specific leak to a particular serial.

Repair, fluid evaluation and appropriate electrical testing must precede energization. No remaining OEM warranty is represented. Determine the repair scope and acceptance criteria with a qualified transformer specialist.

Check copper, fluid and accessories

The supplied configuration uses copper primary and secondary windings and FR3 natural ester fluid. The representative documentation states approximately 689 gallons of fluid per unit, KNAN cooling and a 65°C temperature rise. Fluid type is not a substitute for evaluating the condition of fluid actually present.

The proposed review should also cover the loop-feed arrangement, primary bushings, fusing, switch duty, secondary spades, X0 grounding, gauges and pressure-relief equipment. Verify actual installed accessories and terminal ratings against the load and utility interface.

Plan freight and installation before purchase

The drawing-based envelope is approximately 104.4 inches long, 80.7 inches at maximum width and 84.8 inches high, with a representative weight of 15,408 lb. These are planning figures; verify dimensions, lifting points, transport restraints, pad design, clearances and loading arrangements.

For each quotation, identify whether inspection, testing, repair, fluid work, loading, freight and installation are included or excluded. Keep the acquisition price separate from the cost of a fully installed, accepted transformer.

Ask for a serial-specific review package

Send the required quantity, primary and secondary voltage, location and target date. Identify whether unused units, repair candidates or both are acceptable. We can then coordinate selected-unit records and inspection arrangements. Do not treat a listing photograph or a summed MVA figure as proof of available grid capacity.
